Honesty is better than sugar coated bullshit

Last week I watched a program called Extreme Makeover Home. This time Katy – the name of the woman from the house makeover – wasn’t happy with the final result. Katy did something nobody expected her to do by just being very honest. Directly after the broadcast this fragment went viral. Everyone made fun of her, but why? For being honest? Everybody thinks being honest and having the right to say what you feel and think is important, right?

I personally think honesty is a fascinating topic. Being honest is important, however not everyone is always telling the truth. In fact we all sometimes lie for our own good. But why do we do this? If honesty is really the best policy then why is there so much deception? And if we feel disrespected when someone isn’t honest with us, then how can we justify those little white lies and carefully crafted exaggerations?

On the one hand it’s weird when somebody asks me “how are you?” 99 % of the time I say “good”, even when I’m not. It’s weird we say we like our friends dress while honestly we don’t. We are too scared to hurt somebody and too busy trying to spare someone’s feelings or pride. But is your friendship not much more valuable when you know your friend will tell you the truth, no matter what? And what does the question “how are you?” mean, when your answer is “fine” all the time?

On the other hand I understand being honest is not always easy. But I think “easy” is a bad argument. I believe you can achieve satisfaction and happiness only by conquering something difficult. So instead of just pleasing people by saying you’re fine, you need to say them what you feel and not evade these situations.

Honesty can ruin a lot of things, but only because it’s not the standard in today’s society. We can all do our part by setting a good example, and by having the courage to be truly honest with ourselves and with others.
